GOAL
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) presents visual and performance art in unexpected public spaces. AiOP produces an annual festival along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC from Avenue C to the Hudson River each October.
The Personal Space Suit is a sensor equipped interactive garment created by David Darts and performed by myself. The suit is used to monitor and safeguard personal space by creating a digital security perimeter around the wearer that detects and repels personal space invaders. The project invites us to consider how we manage spacial relationships and respect personal boundaries in our daily lives.
I worked closely with the artist to create the costume and stickers that represented the aesthetic of the project, coining its mantra: Get the Fuck Out of My Personal Space!!!

PROCESS
I was tasked with designing the costume and makeup for the performance. To me, personal space is a feminist concept. Performing on the streets of NYC reminded me of the countless times I’ve been harassed by men who refuse to get out of my space. I therefore wanted the project to have a distinctly feminine feel through exaggerated makeup and trendy, girly clothing.
- I learned how to translate a concept into a cohesive visual identity, including branding materials, stickers, makeup, and costume design.
- I discovered how design can communicate social commentary, including themes of feminism and consent.
